IL-2 Sturmovik is almost unique in World War II flight simulations in that it does not recreate the popular Western Front or even the resurgently attractive Pacific Theatre. Instead the developers have done something many pundits thought would spell economic disaster … built the game around the Eastern Front with hardly a US- or UK-made aircraft in sight. It was a brave move considering a very large percentage of the potential market would be familiar with the more common aircraft, and one that could only succeed if IL-2 Sturmovik offered a level of player immersiveness and detail unseen in any previous title of the genre. Fans of the Luftwaffe would be well catered for, but for simmers who built their virtual flying careers around Spitfires, Mustangs and Thunderbolts, to move across to Iliushins, LaGGs, Yaks and MiGs would take something special. Special is what developer Oleg Maddox and his dedicated crew have delivered.
