Location : Hel Roadstead, Poland Opponents : Poland, Germany Date : 3 SEP 1939 Description : Early in the morning of September 3, 1939, two German destroyers, the Wolfgang Zenker and Leberecht Maas, attempted to bombard the Polish Naval base at Hel, and came under fire from the destroyer Wicher, the minelayer Gryf, and a shore battery consisting of 4 152 mm guns. The Gryf sustained some minor damage, but both German destroyers were damaged forced to withdraw. Both Polish ships were sunk by air attack later that morning.
