Corporate information

Wargamer (known as The Wargamer prior to 2015) was founded by Mario Kroll in September 1995. It was purchased by Network N in February 2018, and today remains a wholly owned-and-operated subsidiary of Network N Media Limited.

The site focused primarily on coverage of computer wargames until its relaunch in January 2021 – since when it has shifted to produce an expanding range of content on tabletop games of all kinds.

Pitch to us

If you’re a talented writer with an idea for a fantastic tabletop gaming article, you could be Wargamer’s next freelance contributor! We’re always on the alert for great news stories, guides, opinion pieces, and features covering tabletop gaming.

Wargamer’s freelance pool is a vibrant group of talented tabletop enthusiasts who chat frequently in our Discord community about new releases, what we’re playing, events in the industry, and the best articles to write about them.

If you’ve got great writing skills, solid nerdy knowledge, and a story to tell, we’d be delighted for you to join us. We’re especially interested in promoting underrepresented voices from a diverse range of backgrounds – so if that describes you, don’t hesitate – get your pitch in today!

Where to send pitches

Please send all pitches to Wargamer’s editor Alex Evans (he/him) via email at: [email protected]

What sort of article should you pitch?

At the moment, we’re most interested in commissioning coverage for Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, Dungeons and Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon TCG, and Lego.

We’re especially keen to expand and improve our library of authoritative guide articles on those areas – from DnD rules and lore explainers to detailed buying guides on the best Lego sets or Pokémon cards of a certain type.

Detailed pitches for new guides on those core topics – or a valuable expansion to one of our current guides – will be strongly preferred.

However, we’ll always consider pitches for guides, features, op-eds, and features about any and all tabletop games – including  board games, tabletop RPGs, trading card games, tabletop wargames, and hybrids thereof – as well as PC and videogames with a strong tabletop and/or strategy flavor.

We particularly like article ideas that manage to explore new or little known games and products by comparing them, or crossing over with, some of our primary titles listed above.

BIPOC and other underrepresented backgrounds

We’re always looking to increase the visibility of underrepresented voices within our editorial output. We care deeply about diversity and inclusion in gaming, and want to take an active stance against racism and injustice.

We have an additional editorial freelance budget that’s reserved for commissioning content from writers of these backgrounds, so please don’t hesitate to pitch us.

We invite your ideas across all of our usual editorial output (see the topic guidance above, and pitching tips below), and, should you wish to, you are also highly welcome to pitch us about your personal experiences in tabletop gaming and wargames as a writer from a less-represented community; we want to increase diversity not only in the writers we commission, but also in the content we publish.

What are your rates?

Wargamer and our Network N Media sister sites have a shared freelance rate card, which we’ll happily share with you on request. We pay set rates for a variety of different structured article types.

We don’t provide unpaid work experience, and never accept or publish any freelance writing that we haven’t commissioned and paid a writer for.

Pitching tips

Got an idea? Here’s how to best capture our interest.

Lead with the headline

Whatever your pitch is, at some point it’s going to need a headline that captures its essence in a digestible, appealing way – so write us one in your pitch, and put it right up top.

Lead with a great headline and it’s much easier for us to understand what makes your pitch attractive. It also tells us you’ve already got the conclusion in mind, so we know you’re presenting a complete argument.

One pitch at a time

You might have a lot of great ideas, but we want your best and most complete idea. One concise summary paragraph that tells us what topics and angles you’re going to talk about is ideal. If you intend to conduct interviews, please give us an idea of who the subjects are and how their input will contribute to the piece.

Word counts and turnaround

Alongside your pitch, we’d appreciate it if you told us what kind of turnaround and word count you have in mind for the piece. Carefully consider the word count, because – while we do publish long-form articles when the source material merits it – we’d almost always prefer a concise, purposeful piece.

Previous experience?

If you’ve got links to relevant articles you’ve written and had published, then please do include those with the pitch. We’re happy to work with new writers, though, so don’t hesitate to pitch if that’s you.

If you currently don’t have any published work or a portfolio to send us, we recommend writing some sample articles (perhaps for your own blog) to showcase your skills to us. What we’re looking for is evidence you have strong writing skills, and can craft an article to a given style and structure – feature, guide, or news.

Tell us what you’re playing

Just because our main focuses right now are Warhammer, D&D, and Magic: The Gathering doesn’t mean that’s all we’re about! We’re interested in covering all kinds of tabletop games and wargames, if the pitch is right – so if you’re getting in touch with us for the first time then please let us know what your specialities and current games are. You never know what expertise we might be on the lookout for.
